In 2018, we planted just under one acre of Merlot at our Thomas Vineyard. Merlot thrives in the clay soils of St. Emilion, which are similar to the clay-heavy soils found in Carneros. Although Carneros is mainly known for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, there is actually a long history of Bordeaux varietals being planted here as well. We wanted to pay tribute to this heritage with our own Merlot. The resulting wine is a Bordeaux with a Pinot Noir sensibility and is focused on elegance and balance as opposed to power.
