In 2022, renowned artist, pianist and composer Yang Bao collaborated with The Donum Estate to create an original musical composition for the launch of Studio Other Spaces’ ‘Vertical Panorama Pavilion’. During this event, Bao premiered his album ‘Hyperdrive,’ a captivating work inspired by echoes and the unpredictable nature of sound, serving as an ode to an ever-changing world beyond human control. This collaboration led to the conceptualization of ‘HYPERSPACE,’ a site-specific sound sculpture complex.

The Creation of HYPERSPACE

Following the launch of the Pavilion, Bao started designing ‘HYPERSPACE’ in collaboration with multimedia artist Wa Liu, known for her work exploring the interconnectedness between humans and nature. This expansive, site-specific sound sculpture complex was conceived to blend seamlessly with the natural environment of our Estate, engaging in constant dialogue with its surroundings.

An Ever-Evolving Soundscape

‘HYPERSPACE’ is designed to reflect the seasonal landscape, with Yang Bao’s site-specific musical composition evolving in response to the wind, temperature and humidity. The reflective surfaces and strategic placement of the structures create an ever-evolving soundscape, mirroring the dynamic natural environment and immersing guests in an infinite matrix of sensations and imaginations.

Central to the Installation: The Golden Pyramid

At the heart of the installation stands a golden pyramid composed of 24k gold-coated stainless steel, embodying an elegant and timeless aesthetic. Within it lies a futuristic space organ, composed of nine mirror-finish stainless steel sculptures. These sculptures emit ethereal melodies that reverberate seamlessly within the vineyards. The number nine, symbolizing infinity and eternity in ancient cultures, plays a pivotal role in the harmonious composition of ‘HYPERSPACE’. In the surrounding fields, nine additional mirror-finish stainless steel sculptures create a spatial soundscape that evolves through time and chance, transforming the complex into a gigantic instrument and fostering a reciprocal exchange between humans and nature.

"Through this unique sound installation, I aim to capture the essence of Donum, evoking its subtle and emotive qualities. Guests can enjoy Donum wine surrounded by ever-changing sounds, carefully designed to create a spatial atmosphere,” Yang Bao shares. ‘HYPERSPACE’ encourages visitors to experience the land's beauty with open senses and to appreciate the connection between humans and nature.”
